Chef Roger's Riyadh Adventure
Chef Roger has returned home to Victoria and his Victoria Marriott culinary team, safe and sound. He has shared with us wonderful stories of his adventure in Riyadh, new found friends and amazing new recipe ideas. From Fire & Water to sand and desert... our globetrotting Chef is in the spotlight! We are excited to announce that our Executive Chef, David Roger, will represent Canada at the upcoming "Taste of Canada" event at the Marriott Riyadh Hotel, Saudi Arabia. Chef Roger has been invited to showcase Canadian cuisine at the Terrace Grill Restaurant during events for dignitaries, ambassadors, and many local guests. Saturday, February 16
Chef arrived in Riyadh and will take the following day to rest from jet lag. Riyadh time is 11 hours ahead of Victoria!
Sunday, February 17 thru Thursday, February 21
Chef arrived safely and began his first day in the kitchen at 06:30 am on Monday. Long days and much training. Plated Embassy dinner for 18 guests on Tuesday, plated dinner for 100 on Wednesday and Taste of Canada opening - Thursday night. Follow us on our Facebook page as we share menus and photos.
Friday, February 22
The Taste of Canada festival opened with great enthusiasm from locals and guests. Distinguished attendees to the first dinner included the Canadian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and the General Manager of Riyadh Marriott, among others. Chef also delivered a short speech to all the guests before the meal. After that, it was bon appétit!
Saturday, February 23 - Sunday, February 24
Chef continues to work with the Terrace Grill team to coach them through the Canadian menu. Everyone is looking forward to the challenge of serving new food over the coming weeks!
Monday, February 25
Part of Chef's time in Riyadh will be spent teaching some of his skills to both Saudis and foreign residents. Chef spent part of today outside the hotel teaching a cooking class. About 30 American women enjoyed a professional cooking demonstration held in their neighborhood.
Tuesday, February 26
Chef cooked a four-course dinner at the Canadian Embassy. Guests included many foreign ambassadors and dignitaries. What an honour for Chef! The first three dishes are shown below. And for dessert? A very Canadian crème brulée... To take a closer look and see more photos, visit our Facebook page.
Thursday, February 28
News of Chef Roger's arrival in Riyadh for the Taste of Canada event was picked up by many news organizations. The Terrace Grill opening featured a ribbon cutting ceremony with Canada's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia in attendance. Chef Roger received a letter of commendation from our Canadian Ambassador! This is good news, since the Ambassador would definitely know great Canadian food. The letter says Chef's menu was "expertly chosen and impeccably delivered," and that several people commented that it was "the best meal they had experienced since coming to the Kingdom." Way to go, Chef!
Wednesday, March 6
Chef's time in Riyadh is drawing to a close soon. The Riyadh Marriott kitchen and banquet staff are giving him a great send-off, including cake! We are grateful for the warm reception Chef has received in Riyadh and for the friends he has made. Some of these friends are also new fans of our Facebook page!
